What is the healthiest diet?

That question ought to be something that science settled long ago. However, despite medical advances and our understanding of the human body and how it works, there remains much discussion and debate about which foods are best for us.

Fortunately, that argument may have been put to rest by a very large, rigorous study from the New England Journal of Medicine. It was a study of 7,447 people in Spain who were followed for almost five years.

The researchers, from the New England Journal of Medicine, found that adhering to a Mediterranean diet led to a significant reduction in the number of strokes. Indeed, the study was halted early because the results were so striking that all participants in the study were switched to the clearly superior diet.

So what is the Mediterranean diet?

Here are some surprising highlights:

Olive oil: 4 tbsp/day

Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts and peanuts: 3 servings/week

Fresh fruits: 3 servings/day

Vegetables: 2 servings/day

Fish (especially fatty fish), seafood: 3 servings/week

Legumes: 3 servings/week

Wine with meals (optional): 7 glasses/week

What does the Mediterranean diet recommend against?

Here are some common sense limits, which we should stay below:

Commercial baked goods, sweets, pastries: 3 servings/week

Spreadable fats: 1 serving/day

Red and processed meats: 1 serving/day
