Doctors have recommended a host of treatments for low back pain, ranging from aspirin to surgery. Because of the wide variety of remedies available, as well as the considerable difference in their costs, the Agency for Healthcare Policy and Research (AHCPR), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, conducted a study to find out what forms of treatment were most beneficial.

Studies

The study was entitled “Understanding Acute Low Back Problems.” It found that “spinal manipulation,” such as performed by chiropractors, is one of the “proven treatments” for low back pain. Unfortunately, too often many sufferers resort to surgery for low back problems that could have been corrected by chiropractic care. The AHCPR report states, “surgery has been helpful in only 1 in 100 cases of low back problems.”

Research

Most often, patients suffering low back pain have a combination of factors which work together to cause their pain: muscles, the spine and nerves are frequently all involved. Due to the pain, the muscles often go into spasm or “splint” in order to keep the low back from moving and causing more pain. The bones of the spine frequently become immobile due to the muscles splinting.

This is very unhealthy for the discs which form the cushions or shock absorbers in between the vertebrae of the spine.

Treatment

Dr. Mills may use his hands or a special instrument to restore proper motion to the immobilized joints of the spine. This restores health to the discs and relieves pressure on the spinal nerves. The spinal nerves are direct extensions of the spinal cord and responsible whenever a patient experiences low back pain that radiates into his or her buttocks or down the legs.

When proper motion is restored to the joints of the spine, the spinal nerves are often freed from pressure and the patient no longer experiences these types of radiating pain. Although some cases of low back pain are due to one specific injury, such as a car accident or a serious fall, much more often the cause is harder to pinpoint.

It may be only a simple twisting motion of the low back or lifting of a relatively light object that sets off the pain. In these cases, the back was usually “reconditioned” and only a very minor aggravation was enough to cause the pain.

Prevention

Here are some steps you can take to help ensure that you won’t become a victim of low back pain.

  1. Drink two quarts of water each day. The discs have no direct blood supply and are, basically, water filled cushions, similar to sponges. Drinking enough water helps them stay healthy
  2. Watch your weight. People who are overweight place an extra load on their spines
  3. Keep your spine flexible. If a particular vertebrae doesn’t move in relation to its neighbor, then the disc between them will dry out, shrink and cause PAIN.
  4. Contact us. We can recommend specific exercises to help you maintain spinal flexibility.
